Summer wildflowers growing in a pond's shoreline buffer

Civic Center Park sits at the heart of our community, including substantial natural areas in addition to city hall, the community center, police and fire stations.

This location encompasses natural wetland along Minnehaha Creek, several types of woodland, large oak trees, and habitat for breeding songbirds, migratory birds, raptors and other wildlife.

Challenges at Civic Center are similar to those in many parts of Minnetonka: persistent invasive species, tree loss to diseases and pests and deer browsing. However, there is also a history of restoration in several areas that can be built upon.

Priorities for this restoration and maintenance plan include:

  • Continued invasive species control
  • Increased restoration in several areas, with a focus on greater plant diversity in the ground layer of vegetation
  • Preservation of large, old oak trees and good habitat
  • Increasing the resilience of trees to climate change
  • Volunteer engagement
