Cities are not built by chance. It takes careful planning and a long-term vision for the community’s future. A comprehensive plan is a guiding document that serves as a blueprint for the city’s long-term growth and development. It establishes a community vision and sets goals over the next 20 years.
An important role of a comprehensive plan is to designate land for specific uses, including residential, business and parks. This ensures Minnetonka balances development with the community’s changing needs for housing, transportation, recreation, sustainability and more.
Minnesota cities are required to update their comprehensive plan at least every 10 years.
2040 Comprehensive Plan
The Minnetonka City Council approved the 2040 plan in January 2019. After review and comment by adjacent communities and affected agencies, the city submitted the guide plan to the Metropolitan Council, who approved the guide plan in December 2020 and authorized the city to put the plan into effect.
2050 Comprehensive Plan
Minnetonka will soon be working on its next plan, envisioning our community through a 2050 comp plan update. Check back in early 2027 for more information.
