Jidana Park sits on 60 acres just west of Minnetonka's Civic Center. Two large, wooded islands are surrounded by the city's largest block of wetland that surrounds Minnehaha Creek near its headwaters at Gray's Bay.
Ongoing restoration here addresses numerous challenges, including invasive plants and overgrowth of native "pioneer" tree species, extensive deer browsing, and periodic drought that makes oaks more vulnerable to oak wilt, bur oak blight or other diseases and pests.
Buckthorn management and selective removal of pioneer trees can reduce competition for light, water and nutrients in Jidana Park's oak woodland and savanna, oak-hickory woodland and aspen parkland plant communities. Replanting and seeding of suitable native vegetation will also increase climate resilience and create more diverse habitat to support pollinators and wildlife.

In May and June, staff conducted outreach with residents and volunteers to discuss restoration and maintenance goals.
The preliminary restoration and maintenance plan was presented to the park board on June 4. Park Board comments will be incorporated into the plan, and the plan will be made available for public feedback.
2025 through 2026
Restoration and plant community maintenance work will be enhanced by prioritized strategies developed in the plan.
