Overlay projects extend the life of the existing roadway. Each summer, Minnetonka Public Works overlays new asphalt on city streets due normal to wear and tear. City engineers review street quality and select streets for maintenance based on the city's street management plan. Depending on street condition, streets are typically overlaid every 15-20 years. Residents are not assessed for these projects.
Access to properties will be maintained throughout the project. The exception is if concrete curb and gutter need replacing in front of your driveway. You will be contacted by Public Works before the project begins in this case.
Public Works staff will direct drivers during the milling and overlay process, and will assist residents as they navigate to their property.
Street overlay projects proceed as follows:
Pre-phase
Sections of settling or failed concrete curb and gutter are removed and replaced. The right of way may be impacted in this process. Yards and landscaping will be restored after completion
Phase one
The road is milled down approximately 1.5 inches along the curb line. Drainage issues are reviewed in this phase
Phase two
Manholes and gate valves are raised to accommodate new the new layers of asphalt.
Phase three
A new layer of asphalt is applied to the roadway.
