Minnetonka Mills Park includes the historic Burwell House and a stretch of Minnehaha Creek.
This site includes abundant long-lived oak trees, where rare habitat types such as oak savanna and oak woodland can be restored. Turf areas can be swiftly transitioned to oak savanna. Creek buffer restoration will reduce erosion, improve water quality in the creek and create more attractive walking areas.
Challenges here include:
- Oak wilt and oak blight are present and may threaten restoration efforts.
- There is unchecked growth of sumac and invasive buckthorn along the creek
- Restoration conditions are challenging, including steep slopes and reduced sunlight to the ground along the creek.
