Several private utility companies have been working on the installation of new fiber optic cable lines across Minnesota. At any time during the year, these companies may be working to install, upgrade, repair or maintain their facilities in Minnetonka.
While this work is not being performed by or for the City of Minnetonka, utility providers do have permits from the city to perform this work. Right-of-way permits allow companies to work within the right-of-way and utility easements. Utility companies and their contractors are expected to follow the requirements of the permit.
Before beginning projects, private utility companies or their contracted companies are expected to:
Provide residents and businesses with information about the work that is being completed
Give customer service contact information
If you have questions or concerns about utility work in your neighborhood, first contact the utility company or its contractor. A list of companies is provided in the Project Contacts section of this webpage.
If you cannot identify the company working in a particular location, contact the city's Engineering Division at 952-939-8246 for assistance.

While installation of fiber optic cable can vary from company to company, it is typically performed in three steps:
Preinstallation-Survey crews will perform site surveys of existing conditions on the ground and on utility poles. Utility marking will identify all known underground utilities, including gas and power lines. Residents typically will be notified of work with mailed notifications, door hangers or door-to-door knocking.
Residents should contact installers about any items such as invisible dog fences, sprinkler lines and any other privately owned utilities located within the utility easement. It's the property owner's responsibility to mark these items.
Installation- Crews working for the utility contractor install fiber cable along designated routes. This is done either by hanging via utility poles, underground boring, and sometimes both, depending on location.
If installed underground, utility companies may dig holes into the easement on your property. These holes are used to visually inspect the cable as it is run underground, or to visually inspect existing utilities to avoid conflicts.
You may notice new utility boxes and "hand holes'. These are typically flush with the ground.
Restoration: Following installation, contractors will restore the area by removing debris, restoring soil and reseeding. Please note that there may be a brief gap in time between installation and restoration.
